A colorful NOTCH on an overpriced tag.
OPPO, a company always adopting new features to their phones to compete with another Android phone manufacturer. With the OPPO R9, they came with a dual camera set up. OPPO R11s brought the bezel to the minimum. And now they have introduced OPPO R15 Pro with mid-range secs, dual camera set up and with some serious intentions.

OPPO R15 Pro, a naked eye view.
No doubt, OPPO has done a great job to make their brand shine to the people. Especially if you are from Asia, then you can say that what OPPO has done to grab the attention of the crowd. Hiring top end models to advertise their phones, top rated designers to take the phone’s design to the next level. But unfortunately, in most case, OPPO phones made a symbol of artificial beauty. Like, giving less quality hardware compared to its price and capturing artificial photos by doing some software tricks! But all they did was to advertise wherever they can. For me, it worked actually!
Now get back to our main topic, the OPPO R15 Pro. Yes, the moment you see this particular model, you will say, it’s gorgeous. With a signature paint job, the OPPO R15 is definitely an eye-catcher. But for this moment let’s go through some PROS and CONS that we’ve experienced using the R15 Pro.
> Great outlook
> Great display brightness
> Smart Navigation
> High-resolution selfie camera
> BIG Storage and RAM.
> Expensive price
> Buggy ColorOS
> Micro USB port
> Slow motion video only at 720p
One word. High class. The best part of the OPPO R15 Pro is the design. It has become a trend to use a ceramic back over metal back. This phone also has a ceramic back, very friendly to brake! A Corning Gorilla 5 display will ensure a minimum damage to your phone’s display. With a 7.4 mm thickness, this phone hardens with an aluminum frame. And the most anticipated feature is the Notch! Android phone makers are going crazy on this feature. Offering a very little bezel, a great 6.28inch AMOLED display shines through its front panel.
For protection both in front and back, OPPO R15 Pro is equipped with byCorning Gorilla glass. Nebula Purple, Hot Red, and Snow White will be the color options. A limited Ceramic Black version will be available for only China. Underneath the colorful body, the weight of this phone is just 175g and the dimension is 155.x 75 x 7.5 mm. Curved at the edge the OPPO R15 Pro is IP67 rated for outside China market.
The ColorOS game
First of all, I have to say, the AI feature has been taken by a lot of companies like Huawei P20 Pro, Asus, One Plus. And now its time for OPPO to jump into the race. ColorOS version 5 introduces a better AI features. The new version also comes with faster face unlock, real-time translation, better gallery experience, redesigned icon pack, new short-cut gestures, new security features, better call history and many more. But it’s a bit buggy. ColorOS has minimum bloatware but not actually a Pure Android. If you go to the left pane from your home screen, you’ll get a screen like Google Now feature. It’ll give quick access to your calendar, weather, flight info, world clock and many more. You can either change your desired topic or categories by yourself or you can leave it to AI to set them by your daily activities. Another trick of ColorOS is interchangeable wallpaper. You can set the wallpaper category to change them periodically.
The fingerprint sensor is always on. It is blazing fast and accurate. Also having a face detection unlock along with the fingerprint sensor. And it is better than the iPhone X. And because of the 120 detection points, it’s impossible to fool it with an image.
The home screen wallpaper can’t be changed but lock screen wallpaper can be. You can also choose different themes from their default theme menu. Changing theme will also change the home screen wallpaper, icon pack, and system fonts.
Notification pane and gestures
In the notification pane, you can find the usual things like brightness control, quick toggles and many quick access shortcuts. But the recent app or task switcher interface is very identical to the iPhone X style! Because of the big screen, it’s naturally hard to access the upper top corner of the display. Here comes the use of smart gesture. When the full-screen gesture is enabled, a three-line navigation pane will be placed at the bottom of the screen. When swiping up all the way up from the middle pane, it acts like the home button. But when you stop swiping up in a middle way, it’ll take you to the task switcher. Swiping to the left or right will act like the back button.
Qualcomm Snapdragon’s 660 is definitely a mid-ranger. It’ll not compete with the top class phones but it’ll do the job done. As a result, Kryo 260 CPU is a decent performer with its Octa-Core chip. Because of the 6GB RAM, multitasking will be an ease to use. Jumping between the apps, accessing the apps is snappy as well. Yet 6GB of RAM the management of it is fairly questionable. It has some issues with App freezing problem. Sometimes when launching an app, it becomes stuck in the home-screen resulting in not enabling to start that particular app. Finally, this problem can be solved by closing that app from the task switcher.
3400mAh battery can easily take you to all day long use. While in hard use, OPPO R15 Pro lasted half day. But the funny thing is, ColorOS will not give you the Screen On Time score, so I was unable to measure the SOT. VOOC fast charging will let your device charge fast enough.
There is nothing to be proud of the OPPO R15 Pro’s hardware. Without the RAM, this phone is just a mid-ranger. 128 GB of onboard storage will definitely bring joy to the user and the joy will be doubled seeing a micoSD expansion option. But if you want to use a microSD card, then you have to sacrifice a SIM slot. Because of the hybrid SIM option, you can use 2 SIMs and a microSD card. After starting the device, we saw approximately 2.5 GB of RAM was used. And with no background app running, it also assumed that 2,5 GB of space. So the RAM management is on the bad side.
On the bottom of the phone, you’ll find a speaker grill, the almighty headphone jack, and a micro-USB jack. I was wondering to see a micro-USB port instead of a USB Type-C port at this price point. Don’t know what OPPO was thinking while putting the micro-USB jack.
Paired with a dual camera set up this phone’s back camera is fairly decent. A 16 MP and a 20 MP duo will capture great images, no doubt about that. The color accuracy is good enough but the problem arrives at the sharpness. OPPO is known to make their phone’s captured image look good by implementing some software tricks. And this is the case for this phone also. When looking at a photo it looks ok but when you are zooming in, the quality drops drastically. The image becomes softer and dizzy. OPPO R15 Pro has a slow-mo video recording option but it is limited to only 720p. And a Portrait mode is also introduced. But it is far from accurate. Missing the edges, implementing unnecessary blur effect around the edges. The portrait mode is a complete shame for this camera module and software. This phone will definitely stand against Huwaei P20 Pro and Google Pixel’s blur photos.
Where this phone shines is the front camera. OPPO has put a lot of hard work to make the front camera good enough. This phone can easily shine in the front camera section. There is beauty mode turned on by default which will soften the image by removing any spot in the face. But this feature will lose the detail and originality.
Price and Final opinion
Ruby Red model = 3,299 yuan (Approximate $520)
Infinity Black = 3,499 yuan (Approximate $550)
At this price point, we are afraid to say that, OPPO R25 Pro is definitely not a recommendation. OnePlus 6 is coming ahead and obviously, have more reputation than the OPPO R15 Pro. And the pricing will certainly be less than R15 Pro, which is no call for the OPPO R15 Pro.
But if you really want to be the winner of the selfie game, then this model will be your go. So, before the release of OnePlus 6, there are many alternatives in less price point.
